I’m back with news of my first project to broadcast in 2021; the new UK TV advert for the novel THE ART OF DYING, published by CANONGATE BOOKS, which is now available in paperback. The advert started broadcasting on UK TV earlier this month and also features on CANONGATE’S online channels, such as YOUTUBE and their website. The advert was produced and animated by the very talented team at KOALA, with my work on the project covering original music composition, sound design and audio post-production.
THE ART OF DYING was first released in 2019 and was shortlisted for the McILVANNEY PRIZE 2020. The author, AMBROSE PARRY, is actually a pseudonym for the Scottish couple CHRIS BROOKMYRE and MARISA HAETZMAN. BROOKMYRE is an internationally best-selling and award-winning author, and HAETZMAN is a consultant anaesthetist. Both of these backgrounds prove essential to the plot of THE ART OF DYING.
Here’s the synopsis from the publisher:
Edinburgh, 1849. Hordes of patients are dying all across the city, with doctors finding their remedies powerless. And a whispering campaign seeks to paint Dr James Simpson, pioneer of medical chloroform, as a murderer.
Determined to clear Simpson’s name, his protégé Will Raven and former housemaid Sarah Fisher must plunge into Edinburgh’s deadliest streets and find out who or what is behind the deaths. Soon they discover that the cause of the deaths has evaded detection purely because it is so unthinkable.
“A gripping Victorian thriller” Sunday Express
“Full of twists and turns - a great read” Evening Times
After my work last year on a host of adverts for publishers HODDER & STOUGHTON, it’s great to kick off 2021 with an opportunity to showcase my composition and production techniques with a new end-client in CANONGATE. On the visual side KOALA have got this format and style absolutely down to a tee. Whenever I get the chance to work with them I know I’ll be given great visuals to work some audio magic to.
We’ve got another few collaborations in the works, so I’ll be back with the details of those very soon. I’ll also have news of more of my music seeing an imminent release through UNIVERSAL PRODUCTION MUSIC. I spent some time last spring and summer writing music for myself, instead of for a specific project or client, and I can’t wait to see some of it get a release in the next few months.
It’s been a busy few winter months in my studio and I can’t wait to roll on in to the spring. If you’re a content creator putting together your next project, please feel free to GET IN TOUCH to discuss how we can create an amazing soundtrack for your production.
